Snow and a hand-held flag set this photograph apart from other views of the 1908 New York-to-Paris race. Two men stand beside an automobile in a winter scene, one holding the American flag. The race left Times Square in February 1908 and headed west across a continent with few paved roads, where crews often had to haul cars through snow, mud and streams. The American-built Thomas Flyer went on to win in July 1908, and images like this one show how much of the journey depended on the men and machines themselves.
