Five men strain to free an automobile sunk in deep mud, a scene that shows the punishing conditions early motorists faced. The New York to Paris race of 1908 left Times Square that February and sent six cars across the United States, Siberia and Europe, often over roads that were little more than tracks. The record dates this photograph to about 1905, earlier than the race, so it likely shows the general struggle of early long-distance driving rather than the contest itself. It was made by the New York firm Spooner and Wells.
