Few early motoring events drew as much attention as the New York-to-Paris race, which left Times Square in February 1908 with six cars. This scene shows a man walking ahead of an automobile across a wide, snow-covered expanse, a reminder that much of the route crossed open country with few or no roads. The American entry, the Thomas Flyer, went on to win after crossing the continent and Siberia, reaching Paris in late July. The 1908 date on the caption card is marked as uncertain, so the scene may come from one of the winter stretches of the course.
