A car stranded in deep snow captures one of the hazards of the New York-to-Paris automobile race of 1908, when a small field of early touring cars set out in winter weather. The race left New York in February and crossed the American interior before continuing overseas, so teams often had to dig, haul, and improvise when roads disappeared. The American entry, the Thomas Flyer, went on to win, but photographs like this one show how much of the effort went into simply keeping the machines moving. The date on the caption card is uncertain, so the picture is best read as a period image of the race's harsh conditions.
