Flags hang over a snow-covered street in this view of four men seated in an automobile, a scene from the transcontinental stretch of the 1908 New York to Paris race. The race left Times Square in February 1908 and crossed the United States before the cars were shipped to Asia for the Siberian crossing. The cars had to cross the American interior in midwinter, when roads were often unpaved and snowbound, so the drivers were as much pioneers as racers. The record credits the New York firm Spooner and Wells, Inc., and does not name the men shown.
