Mud and ruts dominate this 1908 view of a car struggling along a rural road, a reminder of how little of the country had paved routes when the New York to Paris Race began that February. The entrants left Times Square and first had to cross the United States toward San Francisco, where the cars were shipped across the Pacific before crossing Siberia and Europe. The studio of Spooner and Wells in New York produced the print, and its record ties it to the race's transcontinental stage, when drivers often spent days pulling their cars out of bogs and washouts.
