A car has slid nose-first into a roadside ditch on a New York State road, its driver left to work out how to get it back onto the road. The picture dates to 1909, a time when automobiles were still new and most rural roads were unpaved dirt or gravel, with shallow drainage ditches that could catch an unwary driver. It comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, the files of a news photography service that sold pictures to newspapers, so it was likely made to document an everyday mishap of early motoring. Pictures like this show how quickly the car had outrun the roads it was meant to travel.
