The Volkswagen here was a rare sight in the United States in 1950, when the small German car was still almost unknown to American buyers. It is displayed as part of the German Industrial Exposition, a show sponsored by the U.S. military government in occupied Germany to demonstrate the country's recovering manufacturing. Placed at the Museum of Science and Industry in New York City, the exhibit was meant to present postwar West German industry to American audiences. Set beside the larger, chrome-heavy cars of the period, the Volkswagen's plain, rounded body, based on a design by Ferdinand Porsche's team, looks strikingly modest.
