Rose City, a small village in northern Michigan, gives this print its setting, and the title names the vehicle simply as "Rose's auto," an early experimental car. The print is attributed to Nelson William Colbath, a photographer working in Rose City, and it is part of the Wittemann Collection at the Library of Congress. Dating from between 1900 and 1920, it shows a time when automobiles were still scarce and many were built by individual owners and small workshops rather than large factories. Michigan would soon become the center of American car making, so a homemade machine from a town this size shows how quickly the idea of the motorcar was spreading.
