This 1928 Underwood & Underwood photograph records the presentation of an early steam automobile to the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C. The record names Carl W. Mitman, a curator at the U.S. National Museum, and Paul Garber, who later became known for his work on the Smithsonian's aviation and transportation collections. Steam cars were common on American roads around 1900, before gasoline engines and electric starters pushed them aside, so a surviving example was a notable addition to the national collections. Group portraits from the 1920s often placed people beside the object being honored, and this one follows that pattern.
