This picture shows a man and a woman posed together inside an automobile somewhere in the Washington, D.C., area, a setting that was becoming common in the 1920s as cars moved from novelty to everyday transportation. The National Photo Company, a commercial studio active in the capital in the early twentieth century, made many such pictures of local residents and street life, and its negatives were later deposited with the Library of Congress. Because the record does not name the couple or the exact location, the photograph is most useful for what it shows of the period: the car as a place for leisure, display, and social outings.
