This drawing shows an American Oil Co. service station at the corner of Massachusetts and Wisconsin Avenues Northwest in Washington, D.C., with a floor plan and a landscape plan for the alterations. Done in graphite and color pencil on tracing paper, it was a working document, the kind architects and engineers used to plan changes before construction. It belongs to the Arthur B. Heaton Archive, and it shows how the city's commercial buildings on busy avenues were redesigned as automobile traffic grew.
