Few pictures on this board show the business side of the roadside boom as plainly as this 1946 set of plan and elevation drawings for a Sinclair Oil Refining Co. automobile service station. Done in graphite and color pencil on tracing paper, it lays out the site and the building's exterior as the company intended them to be built. After World War II, oil companies standardized station designs so their brands would be easy to spot from the highway, and Sinclair, whose green dinosaur mascot was already a familiar sight at its pumps, was one of them. The colored pencil work shows how the planners wanted the finished station to look.
