A colored-pencil drawing on tracing paper shows an Amoco service station in Washington, D.C., drawn in front elevation so the entrance, canopy and signage are easy to read. Oil companies of the 1920s and 1930s often used repeatable station designs so drivers would recognize the same building and lettering from town to town. Drawings like this one helped plan those buildings and present them to clients, and the soft color on translucent paper shows how a roadside station could be presented as a tidy addition to a city street. The sheet belongs to the Arthur B. Heaton Archive in the Library of Congress Prints and Photographs Division.
