Few drawings on this board show a roadside business as carefully planned as this set for a combined car wash and filling station at Connecticut Avenue and Ordway Street in Washington, D.C. Architect Arthur B. Heaton prepared the plot plan, elevations and sections for Shannon & Luchs, Inc. Such stations became common in the 1920s as car ownership spread through American cities, and drawings like these show how designers fit pumps, wash facilities and a service area onto a single corner lot while keeping the street-facing facade presentable. Heaton's plans offer a useful record of how early motorists were served.
