A combined car wash and service station is an unusual subject, and this architectural drawing documents one designed for Shannon & Luchs Inc. at Connecticut Avenue and Ordway Street in Northwest Washington. The sheet shows the west elevation, along with the south elevation and sections, and its notes indicate that one view was drawn at the north party wall shared with the neighboring property. The project is credited to Arthur B. Heaton, a Washington architect known for many commercial buildings in the city. Drawings like this reflect the growth of the automobile, when gas stations and car washes spread along busy commercial streets such as Connecticut Avenue.
