A dark sedan marked as an official government vehicle stands in front of Union Station in Washington, D.C., a detail that places the photograph at the city's busiest rail gateway. The station opened in 1907 with a monumental Beaux-Arts design by Daniel Burnham, and by the time this picture was made, cars were becoming a common sight at the curb as federal business and visitors moved through the capital. The catalog record suggests the vehicle may have been Army-owned, though that is uncertain. The photograph came from the National Photo Company, a commercial studio that documented Washington scenes in the early twentieth century.
