A flagman stands in the foreground while race cars take the banked curve of a wooden track, a setting the catalog places probably in or near Washington, D.C., around 1922. Board tracks like this one were built in the 1910s and early 1920s for speed. Their steeply banked, tightly jointed planks could make for fast laps but also dangerous conditions, and many were torn down within a few years. The National Photo Company, which documented Washington life for newspapers and publications, made the photograph, so it captures how the sport looked to the public of its day.
