This photograph shows car number 14 in competition at the Benning race track, on the eastern edge of Washington, D.C., during a Labor Day event in 1915. Labor Day auto races drew large crowds of spectators, and tracks like Benning gave the rapidly growing motor age a public stage in the years before the First World War. The image comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington studio that documented the city's streets, events and people in the 1910s and 1920s. Its pictures of early racing cars are useful for seeing how the machines, the dirt tracks and the spectators' dress looked in that period.
