Car number 14 sets this picture apart: a racer photographed on the Benning track in the Washington, D.C., area during a Labor Day event in 1915. Benning was better known for horse racing, but by the 1910s its oval also hosted automobile races that drew crowds eager to see the new machines pushed to their limits. The photograph comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington commercial studio that documented city life and local events in the early twentieth century. It offers a useful view of early motor racing, when open cockpits and dusty tracks were the norm.
