A single automobile sits alone on a winding mountain road near Index, a small town in the Skykomish River valley of Washington's Cascade foothills. The photograph is credited to Darius Kinsey, a Pacific Northwest photographer known for his views of logging and rugged terrain, and its caption card dates it to about 1921, when cars were becoming a familiar sight even in remote country. Roads of this kind were often narrow, unpaved and cut into steep slopes, so the picture offers a useful glimpse of how far motor travel had reached into the mountains. The date and place details come from an older caption card and have not been independently verified.
