This elevation drawing shows the front face of an automobile dealership built for the Semmes Motor Company on Massachusetts Avenue Northwest in Washington, D.C. Drawn flat and to scale, it records the building's exterior design without perspective, so the proportions, window bays, and entrances can be compared directly. The graphite and colored pencil on tracing paper reflects how architects of the period worked, with tracing paper allowing revisions and copies to be made from a master sheet. Showrooms like this one appeared along the avenue as automobile ownership grew in the early twentieth century, when dealers needed buildings that displayed cars as prominently as shops displayed goods.
