A man in a suit stands in a deep rut at the side of an unpaved road, one hand resting on the body of a convertible automobile. The record ties the picture to the U.S. Public Roads Administration, a federal agency that studied and built highways in the 1920s, so the photograph was likely made to document the poor condition of a road rather than as a portrait. Its subjects list car, road and rut together, which makes it a useful record of how rough early motor travel could be when many routes were still dirt. The exact location and date are not given in the record.
