Few places in the 1910s showed industrial change as clearly as Detroit's automobile plants, and this stereograph records one step in that work: the building of a car's body. Keystone View Company, a Meadville, Pennsylvania firm, issued cards like this for viewing through a stereoscope, so the paired images gave the factory floor a sense of depth and presence. By about 1916, Detroit was the center of American automobile manufacturing, with the Model T and assembly-line methods drawing workers and new companies to the city. The card is a useful window onto how the public was taught to see mass production as both novel and impressive.
