Finished cars roll out of the final stage of a Detroit auto plant in this stereograph, which pairs two nearly identical views to create a three-dimensional effect when viewed through a stereoscope. Keystone View Company of Meadville, Pennsylvania, issued the card in 1917, during a period when Detroit was becoming the center of the American automobile industry and assembly lines were turning out vehicles in growing numbers. Stereocards like this one were sold as parlor entertainment and educational tools, offering viewers a way to tour distant factories and cities from home. The image captures the industry at a moment of rapid expansion, just before the wartime demands of 1917 and 1918 reshaped manufacturing across the country.
