A stereograph card like this one captures a moment on a Detroit assembly line during the 1910s, when the city was becoming the center of American automobile manufacturing. The scene shows workers mounting a car body onto its chassis, the step where a rolling frame and a finished shell were joined into a complete vehicle. Keystone View Company, based in Meadville, Pennsylvania, produced stereo cards like this for home viewers who looked through a hand stereoscope to see depth in the image. Pictures of factory work were popular with these audiences, who were eager to see how the new machines were built.
