Engineers at work in a Detroit automobile plant are the focus of this stereograph, a stereo card from around 1916 that the Keystone View Company copyrighted and sold to be viewed through a stereoscope. Detroit was then the center of the American auto industry, with Ford, Packard, and many smaller firms turning out cars on assembly lines that had transformed manufacturing in just over a decade. Testing engines before they were installed was one of the careful checks that kept those new cars reliable, so the scene shows the factory's emphasis on quality as well as its scale.
