Workers at a Detroit plant are shown sanding automobile wheels by hand, a finishing step that was done in the middle of a long assembly process. The stereograph was made around June 22, 1917, by the Keystone View Company, a firm known for stereo cards sold to households and schools. By then Detroit was the center of the American auto industry, and wheels were often built up in layers of paint or varnish, with each coat smoothed before the next went on. The scene shows how much skilled, labor-intensive handwork went into cars that were being turned out in growing numbers.
