Cars buried in drifts on a New York City street make this picture stand apart from the many gallery images of early automobiles on clean, paved roads. Winter storms in the 1910s regularly caught the new motor vehicles unprepared, since snow tires, plows, and reliable winter starting were still limited, and horse-drawn sleighs and sleds often kept moving when engines could not. The print was registered for copyright by the Social Press Association, a news-photo service, so it was likely made to be sold to newspapers and read by the public as a picture of the city's winter troubles.
