Frankfurt hosted one of postwar Europe's major auto shows, and this 1955 photograph captures the cars on display there as West Germany's economy was rebuilding quickly. The International Automobile Exhibition, later known as the IAA, gave manufacturers a stage to show new models to the public, dealers, and the press. The photograph came from World Wide Photo, a news agency that supplied images to newspapers and magazines, so it was likely meant for publication alongside coverage of the event. Its subject headings, which cover both automobiles and merchandise displays, point to a view of how the cars were arranged for visitors as much as the vehicles themselves.
