A rare view of the 1908 New York to Paris Race shows an automobile straddling railroad tracks, its wheels set across the rails. Because the cross-country leg ran west from New York through largely unpaved territory, drivers sometimes had to improvise routes where no proper road existed, and rail lines offered a usable path. The race drew six entrants from several countries and ended in Paris that summer, with the American Thomas Flyer taking the win. The print is catalogued under Spooner and Wells, a New York photography firm active in the period.
