Few campaign photographs show the machinery itself, and this one puts the equipment at the center: radio gear fitted to automobiles during Calvin Coolidge's 1924 campaign for the presidency. Coolidge had taken office after Warren Harding's death in 1923 and ran as the Republican incumbent, and 1924 was among the first American election seasons in which radio reached a national audience. Mounting transmitting or receiving apparatus on cars was an improvised way to carry a candidate's words beyond the crowds at a single stop. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., studio that recorded public life in the 1910s through 1930s, made the print.
