Four men stand beside two automobiles outside the garage of Edmund Cogswell Converse in Greenwich, Connecticut, in this 1908 view. Converse was a New York banker whose country property in Greenwich, a town favored by wealthy commuters, was typical of the early 1900s, when a private garage signaled both a new machine and a household that could afford to keep it. The image is a cyanotype, a cheap contact process that produces the distinctive blue-and-white tones seen in many photographs from the decade. Frances Benjamin Johnston's collection preserves it, making it a useful record of how the automobile entered elite domestic life.
