Set in Perryville, Maryland, this photograph shows men at work on automobiles inside a vocational training station, a building where students learned practical trades. The picture dates from between 1900 and 1920, a period when the automobile was moving from novelty to everyday machine and mechanics were in growing demand. Underwood & Underwood, the New York firm that produced the image, was a major commercial photographer of the era, and its pictures of training programs like this one give a useful view of how mechanical skills were taught to working men during the early auto age.
