Two men work on an automobile in the open air beside a factory building, a scene that the catalog record dates to about 1906 but does not identify further, so the plant and the car's make remain unconfirmed. The print was copyrighted by Waldon Fawcett, a photographer and writer who documented the early motor trade. In the first years of the twentieth century, most cars were still assembled and tested by hand, and workers often moved vehicles outdoors for road trials, repairs, and final adjustments. The picture offers a glimpse of that stage of the industry, when the automobile was still a novelty and its builders were as likely to be mechanics as engineers.
