A tight horseshoe bend in the foreground curls toward two automobiles climbing a mountain road outside Colorado Springs, with the slopes rising behind them. The picture comes from the National Photo Company, a commercial firm that produced views of American towns, scenery, and tourist destinations, many of them sold as souvenirs and postcards. By the mid-1910s, the automobile was changing how visitors reached the Rocky Mountain foothills, and roads like these opened scenic country that earlier travelers had reached mainly by train or on horseback. The catalog lists the attribution to Wiswall with a question mark, so the photographer's identity is uncertain.
