Two early automobiles sit side by side in this c1940 print, and the title alone tells us little about their makers or models, so the picture rewards a close look at their boxy bodies, open fenders and high, spoked wheels. By 1940 these cars would already have been decades old, which made them rare survivors of the period when motoring was new and roads were still largely unpaved. Prints like this one, held in the Library of Congress, were often made to document such vehicles for historical or commercial reference, preserving a record of an era when the automobile was just beginning to reshape American life.
