Two automobiles sit in the foreground of this c. 1924 view, one of them a convertible with its top down, against the flat-topped bulk of Black Mesa in northern New Mexico. By the mid-1920s, car ownership was spreading quickly through the American Southwest, and motorists were beginning to cross desert and valley country that had once been reached mainly by wagon or rail. Pictures like this one, which pair new cars with a landmark, show how the automobile was becoming a familiar part of rural landscapes in the region.
