This photoprint, numbered No. 8 and copyrighted by B.M. Clinedinst, takes automobile manufacturers as its subject, but its place name is bracketed in the record and remains unconfirmed. Clinedinst worked as a photographer in Washington, D.C., in the early twentieth century, and his photoprints are held in the Library of Congress. Around 1906 the automobile was still a new product, and many small firms built cars by hand or in modest workshops. Mass production on the moving assembly line, popularized by Henry Ford after 1913, had not yet reshaped the industry, so the image captures a period of experimentation.
