Few 1919 pictures show young women standing picket duty, but this one places a group of girl steel workers outside a steel mill in Indiana. The caption card links the scene to the strikes and lockouts that swept the steel industry that year, when many women had taken factory jobs during the war. The bracketed words in the title show that the cataloguer added some wording beyond the original caption. The image comes from the National Photo Company Collection, which recorded labor unrest for newspapers and magazines of the day.
