Calvin Coolidge is seen here in an automobile at D.A.R. Hall in Washington, where he attended a meeting of the American Red Cross. The photograph dates to 1923, the year Coolidge succeeded the late Warren G. Harding as president and was still settling into his public duties. The National Photo Company, which recorded daily life in the capital, often captured such official arrivals. The car is also worth a closer look, since it shows how quickly the automobile had become the standard way for officials to move around Washington.
