Few things in the Bain collection capture the working life of a city fire company as directly as this group portrait of firemen standing on their apparatus. The record places the picture in New York City sometime between about 1908 and 1916, a period when horse-drawn engines were giving way to motorized pumpers. George Grantham Bain, a news photographer, sold images like this to newspapers, which is why many of his pictures show uniformed crews posed for the camera. The men's dress and the engine itself are worth a close look, since they reflect a transitional era in firefighting.
