A fire engine and its crew pose in Carson City, the seat of Ormsby County in western Nevada, in a photograph dated only to about 1860. The town was then young, having grown quickly after the 1859 discovery of silver at the Comstock Lode drew miners and merchants to the area. Volunteer fire companies were the usual defense against fire in such boomtowns, where wooden buildings stood close together and water often had to be pumped by hand. The date and subject come from an old caption card and have not been verified, so the picture is best read as evidence of early civic life in the settlement.
