Painted by James Queen, a member of the Weccacoe Engine Company, this watercolor shows firemen from his own company hauling a hand-drawn engine out of the firehouse while others scramble to ready themselves. In the 1850s, Philadelphia relied on volunteer companies like Weccacoe, whose members pulled their machines by hand to every alarm and often raced rival companies to the scene. Because Queen drew from firsthand experience, the picture offers a close look at the speed and teamwork a fire call demanded.
