The record gives little beyond its subject: two firemen posed beside a fire engine, a scene that stands out from the many engine portraits on the board because it puts the crew, not just the apparatus, at the center. The National Photo Company, which made the picture, was a Washington, D.C., firm that photographed the city and its surroundings in the early twentieth century, and its negatives were later deposited with the Library of Congress. Pictures like this one, with a pair of men standing by their machine, document the hand-drawn and early motorized fire apparatus that replaced horse teams in American cities during those decades. Its date range, between 1909 and 1932, places it in that transition.
