Clayton, in Gloucester County, New Jersey, was a small community in 1920, part of a southern New Jersey region known for glassmaking, farming, and brickyards. Its fire company was a volunteer organization, as was typical of towns of its size, and such companies depended on local businessmen, residents, and fundraising suppers and dances to keep their equipment in working order. The year 1920 also brought national Prohibition, which took effect in January and changed the habits of saloon-era towns across the state, though New Jersey's local politics remained shaped by county party organizations and the lingering effects of the First World War. Residents would have known the place as a quiet railroad-served borough where the fire company's apparatus, the parade of men in their helmets, and the annual gatherings marked the civic calendar.
