Canton, Ohio, in 1913 was a industrial city of factories, foundries, and rail lines, with steel, roller bearings, and safes among its products. Its best-known resident had been William McKinley, the former governor and president who was buried in a large memorial tomb there after his assassination in 1901, so the city took pride in its civic identity. The Great Ohio Flood of March 1913 had swept through the river valleys of the state only weeks before this photograph, and towns like Canton were still assessing damage and rebuilding levees and bridges. A fire company posed in a panorama like this one showed residents the men who answered alarms in a growing mill town that depended on dense brick and wood buildings and on rapid response to keep neighborhoods safe.
