Niagara Falls, New York, in 1921 was a city whose economy rested on the power of the river that ran past it. Hydroelectric plants drawing from the upper Niagara supplied electricity to electrochemical and abrasives works, and chemical and metal manufacturers had clustered near the gorge for a generation. The falls also drew visitors through every season, so the fire companies protected factories as well as the hotels, boarding houses, and shops that served tourists arriving by train and from across the border in Canada. This photograph of the department lined up together reflects a city growing fast on electricity, industry, and summer crowds. Residents of the day knew their town as a center of power as much as a natural wonder.
