Lexington, Massachusetts, in 1921 was a small town about ten miles northwest of Boston, proud of its place at the first clash of the Revolution on Lexington Green in 1775. By then it was turning from farming toward a residential community whose men commuted to jobs in Boston, with the Boston and Maine railroad running through town. Fire protection in towns like this was moving from horse-drawn equipment to motor apparatus across New England in the early 1920s. Residents would have seen their fire company as part of a modern town that still guarded its historic green and the wooden houses around it.
