Boston's downtown business district burned on the night of November 9 and into November 10, 1872, in what became known as the Great Boston Fire. The blaze started near Summer Street in the wholesale and dry goods quarter, where warehouses full of merchandise fed the flames, and a shift in the wind carried sparks across the financial and commercial blocks. Firefighters from neighboring cities came to help, but the fire burned roughly 60 acres and destroyed several hundred buildings before it was brought under control. The loss fell hard on a city that had grown rapidly as a port and manufacturing center in the decades before the war, and it prompted new debate over building materials and fire protection. This view by Joshua Smith shows the ruins as residents would have known them, a landscape of standing walls and rubble in the heart of the city.
